MV Ganga Vilas has three decks, 18 suites with a capacity of 36 tourists with all luxury amenities. On the first trip, 32 tourists from Switzerland sign up for the entire duration of the trip.
New Delhi: While inaugurating the Ganga Vilas, the world’s largest river cruise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a “new era of tourism in India”, while Congress liaison general secretary Jairam Ramesh called the service “obscene”.
Taking to Twitter, the Congress leader said that the service would also endanger India’s national aquatic mammal. “Ganges river cruise unveiled by PM is obscene! Who can afford Rs 50 lakh per night except the filthy rich? Ganga is still not pure or unbroken. Now this spectacle will also threaten India’s national aquatic mammal – the Gangetic Dolphin,” Jairam Ramesh wrote in his tweet.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off the Ganges River Cruise from Varanasi.
The 51-day cruise, touted as the world’s longest river cruise, is expected to reach its final destination – Dibrugarh in Assam – on March 1.
“The launch of the world’s longest river cruise service on the river Ganges is a significant moment. It will herald a new era of tourism in India,” Prime Minister Modi had said while literally flagging off the cruise via video conference.
Departing from Varanasi, the cruise ship MV Ganga Vilas will end its journey at Dibrugarh after covering a distance of 3,200 km in 51 days, crossing 27 river systems and several states. The journey is filled with visits to 50 tourist destinations including world heritage sites, national parks, river ghats and major cities like Patna in Bihar, Sahibganj in Jharkhand, Kolkata in West Bengal, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Guwahati in Assam.
MV Ganga Vilas Cruise is designed to bring the best of the country to the world.
This trip will allow the tourists to experience the journey and participate in the art, culture, history and spirituality of India and Bangladesh.
