Mahua Moitra’s comments came in response to Gandhi’s claim on Wednesday that the ruling party in West Bengal was contesting the Meghalaya assembly elections to ‘help’ the BJP win.
Criticizing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the Trinamool Congress’ alleged links with the BJP, TMC leader Mahua Moitra on Thursday said her party was the only national alternative to the saffron party.
Mahua Moitra’s comments came in response to Gandhi’s claim on Wednesday that the ruling party in West Bengal was contesting the Meghalaya assembly elections to ‘help’ the BJP win.
“If the Congress could have defeated the BJP, there would have been no need for us (to contest the Assembly polls),” Moitra said at a public rally in support of TMC candidate Elgiva Gwyneth Rayanjah from North Shillong on Thursday. However, as the Congress failed to win the state, we had to come forward to give an alternative to the people. TMC is the only option (against BJP).
“Do we have to sit at home and watch the BJP win another general election, while the Congress loses state after state?” she added.
Urging women voters to get behind the party’s North Shillong candidate, Moitra said, “We have the power (to change). Let all men’s opinions be divided. If all women vote for Elgiva, we will win (North Shillong).”
The TMC MP further said that the party’s manifesto for the upcoming assembly elections has been written and published by the party’s North Shillong candidate himself, the party said in an official release.
Further, according to the release, the TMC, in its manifesto, has promised to work for women’s empowerment and build a women’s hostel, a women’s police station and women’s self-help groups if it comes to power.
