No opposition in Nagaland, all parties in BJP alliance?

Although the NDPP-BJP has yet to stake a claim to form the government, it has received unconditional support from other political parties to continue its second innings.

Despite being one of the largest political parties, the new Nagaland government is moving towards an anti-minority government and almost all parties have unconditionally supported the NDPP-BJP alliance that won last month’s elections, NTDV reported.

In the state assembly elections, the results of which were declared on March 2, the pre-poll alliance partners – NDPP-BJP won 25 and 12 seats respectively, out of a total of 37 seats in the 60-member House.

Other political parties including NCP won 7, NPP – 5, LJP (Ramvilas), Naga Peoples Front (NPF) and RPI (Athwale) – 2 each, JD(U) – 1 and Independent – 4 seats. For the first time in Nagaland, so many political parties are witnessing victory in the state assembly elections. LJP (RV) and RPI (Athwale) are newcomers to state politics.

Although the NDPP-BJP has yet to stake a claim to form the government, it has received unconditional support from other political parties to continue its second innings.

LJP (Ram Vilas), RPI (Athwale), JD (U) have already submitted letters of support to the alliance partners, sources said.

The NCP, which is the third single largest party, on Saturday submitted a letter of ‘unconditional’ support to the Nephiu Rio-led NDPP, newly elected NCP MLA Y Mhonbemo Hamtso told PTI on Sunday.

Similarly, NPF secretary general Achumbemo Kikon, who is one of the newly elected legislators, said that although a final decision had not been taken, the two-member party “is likely to support the government”.

Nagaland will have another all-party government with all political parties supporting the victorious NDPP-BJP alliance.

In the past, opposition-free governments were formed during the current tenure of the government in 2015 and 2021, but this will be the first assembly without an opposition before the House is sworn in.
