Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that he plans to close all madrassas in the state. Addressing a public meeting in Belagavi, Karnataka, Mr. Sarma mentioned that his government has already closed 600 madrassas and will close all the rest soon, NDTV reported.

“We don’t need madrassas. We need engineers and doctors,” Mr. Sarma said.

When asked by a reporter to explain his motive behind the decision, Mr. Sarma said that the new India needs schools, colleges and universities instead of madrassas.

“New India does not need madrassas. It requires universities, schools and colleges,” he said.

In the past, Mr. Sarma has often indicated his desire to downsize madrassas or scrutinize the education imparted in these institutions. There are currently 3,000 registered and unregistered madrassas in Assam.

In 2020, he introduced a law that would facilitate the conversion of all government madrassas into “regular schools”. Mr Sarma had said the state police was working with Bengali Muslims, who have a positive attitude towards education, to create a “good atmosphere” in madrassas. Science and mathematics will also be taught as subjects in madrassas and the right to education will be respected and a database of teachers will be maintained, he had said.
