Chandigarh: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have 14 corporators each, while the Congress has six, making the scenario for the Chandigarh mayoral election interesting.
According to reports, both the parties have pulled out their respective corporators from Chandigarh to avoid poaching. “Chandigarh MP Kiran Kher is also entitled to vote in this election. If both parties get equal votes, Kiran Kher’s vote could be decisive for BJP, Shiromani Akali Dal also has one corporator and one vote,” said AAP Chandigarh president Prem Garg.
Last time too, there was a heated debate between Aam Aadmi Party and BJP regarding the mayoral election, but BJP’s Sarabjit Kaur was elected as mayor with a margin of one vote.
This time, BJP has declared Anup Gupta as its candidate for the post of mayor, while Aam Aadmi Party has declared Jasveer Singh Laddy as its candidate.
Chandigarh President of Aam Aadmi Party Prem Garg said that his corporator is also from Ropar.
“Voting for mayors should be open so that the horse market will stop and it will be known directly who has been voted for. BJP has more votes but still Aam Aadmi Party corporator is expected to become mayor,” said Prem Garg. Chandigarh mayoral election will be held on January 17.
